Diverse Relations is a BAME Legal Consultancy founded by Sam Sutton (LL.B (HONS), BVC, Pgce, and MA), a Leeds-based Barrister with over 10 years of experience in the legal sector.

Sam is deeply passionate about diversity in the legal profession, having witnessed firsthand the negative impact of a lack of diversity and cultural sensitivity in legal firms.

In addition to her extensive legal experience, Sam has completed a Master of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Psychology, where she researched and investigated the ongoing issues of diversity and inclusion within the legal workplace.

Sam has also collaborated with NHS Digital’s Embrace Network to support diversity and inclusion in various projects. She has previously served as a keynote speaker and facilitated the organisation of an event for NHS Digital in 2018, celebrating Black History Month.

  • Why Diverse Relations BAME Legal Consultancy

The Bar Council and Solicitors Regulation Authority recognise the imbalance in the legal sector and have conducted extensive research into some of the barriers, though not all. Despite understanding the benefits of diversity and inclusion, there has been little progress in creating a truly diverse and inclusive work environment.

The challenge lies in addressing the problem from within the space where it exists. To effectively solve this issue, it is essential to move beyond the problem's environment and work from a space where solutions can thrive. By adopting this approach, we can create a legal sector that values and promotes diversity and inclusion, ultimately benefiting both legal professionals and clients.

At Diverse Relations, we understand that many diversity and inclusion courses are delivered by non-BAME facilitators who lack the real-world experience and insight into the daily challenges faced by BAME legal sector workers. This often results in courses that miss key subtleties crucial for instigating a culture of change in organisations lacking diversity and inclusion.

As BAME facilitators, we believe that "walking the path is different from knowing the path." Having lived and overcome obstacles due to a lack of inclusion and diversity, we know exactly which key areas need to be tackled to address cultural imbalances in the workplace.

Our courses at BAME Legal Consultancy aim to tackle the core of the problem rather than skirt around superficial issues, which is unfortunately prevalent in many other courses. We strive to create a work culture where everyone can thrive, feel valued for their uniqueness, and harness their cultural capital to help grow your legal practice.
